Your pension benefit does not include and SERS does not offer a retiree health care program. Different SERS employers handle retiree health benefits in different ways; you should contact the HR service center or, if your employing agency is not served by the center, your employer's HR office for more information.
Agencies under the Governor's jurisdiction, which comprise the majority of SERS-participating employers, offer the Retired Employees Health Program. Typically called REHP, this program is run by the Governor's Office of Administration through the Pennsylvania Employees Benefit Trust Fund. If you belong to a retiree health program and we withhold your premiums from your pension payment, the amount of the payment you receive will change when your premiums change.
The REHP, for example, has important coverage coordination requirements with the federal Medicare program. You and your dependents must enroll in Medicare as soon as you become eligible to remain in the REHP, read more at the Pennsylvania Employees Benefit Trust Fund website. Your premium may change substantially based on your Medicare status.
