Class A-4 Election

If you were enrolled in SERS after January 1, 2011, you are most likely a member of SERS' A-3 class of service. As such, you have 45 days from the day you receive your new member packet to elect to belong to the A-4 class of service instead. This is a one-time opportunity and your decision is final and binding, there is no opportunity to change your mind later. You are strongly encouraged to evaluate this option carefully and consult a financial planner or other adviser before making your decision.

Differences between A-3 and A-4

In class A-3, you contribute 6.25% of your pay and, when you retire, the multiplier used in your pension formula will be 1.00 (for a total benefit accrual rate of 2%).

In class A-4, you contribute 9.3% of your pay and, when you retire, the multiplier used in your pension formula will be 1.25 (for a total benefit accrual rate of 2.5%).

The amount your employer contributes does not change.

Final, Binding, and Irrevocable Decision
If you elect A-4 membership, you will pay a higher contribution to your retirement benefit for your entire public career, even if you leave state employment and return later. If you run into unexpected financial hardships in the future, you will not be able to reduce the amount withheld from your pay.

One-Time, Time-Limited Option

When we are notified that you have been enrolled in SERS, we will send a letter to your home providing more details about this decision. With the letter will be a form that includes a deadline by which you must notify us if you want to become a part of the A-4 class of service.

The deadline is 45 days after you receive notification. If you do not notify us by the deadline, you will remain in class A-3 and you will not have another opportunity to choose to join the A-4 class.

If you have any questions about the differences between the two classes of service, the letter we send to you, or the deadline provided, please promptly call 1.800.633.5461.
